Philip Seymour Hoffman

American actor (1967–2014)

Being

Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 – February 2, 2014) was an American actor. He was known for his distinctive supporting character roles and his memorable leading roles in many films and theatrical productions from the early 1990s until his death in 2014. He was voted the greatest actor of the 21st century in a 2024 ranking by The Independent. Hoffman studied acting at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. He gained recognition for his supporting work, notably in Scent of a Woman (1992), Boogie Nights (1997), Happiness (1998), The Big Lebowski (1998), Magnolia (1999), and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). He was also nominated for Academy Awards for his performances in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Doubt (2008), and The Master (2012). While he mainly worked in independent films, Hoffman also appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as Twister (1996) and Mission: Impossible III (2006). In one of his final roles before his death, he played Plutarch Heavensbee in the Hunger Games series (2013–2015). The feature film Jack Goes Boating (2010) marked Hoffman's debut as a filmmaker. Hoffman was also an accomplished theater actor and director. Remembered for the nuance, depth, and humanity he brought to his diverse roles, Hoffman was described in his obituary in The New York Times as "perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation".

J. M. W. Turner

English painter and draftsman (c.1775–1851)

Being

Joseph Mallord William Turner (London, 23 April 1775 – London, 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic and regarded as one of the greatest and most influential British painters. He elevated the status of landscape painting and is considered a precursor of Impressionism. Turner started his career as a watercolourist, achieved fame and financial success as an oil painter and was also an expert printmaker. His later paintings challenged classicisist artistic conventions and were rejected by critics but are considered today his most important works. Their expressionistic renditions of light and atmosphere inspired the early impressionists Monet and Pissarro when they saw them in London in 1870, 20 years after Turner's death. A child prodigy, Turner was accepted as a student at the Royal Academy of Arts when he was only 14 years old and had a rapid ascent to recognition, fame and financial success. He exhibited his first work in the Academy's Annual Exhibition at 15 and when he was 18 he received a prize recognizing him as a master watercolourist. By his early twenties, he was selling his oil paintings at top market prices to wealthy art collectors and gaining high praises from the academic establishment. At 27, Turner was elected as a Royal Academician, the highest status in the institution, and becoming the youngest artist to achieve this distinction in the Academy's history. In spite of these accomplishments, he was sneered at during his whole career by a few influential critics due to his humble origins; his father was a barber and his mother came from a family of butchers. His unkept appearance and rough demeanor contributed to this perception. Turner's artistic style evolved significantly during his lifetime. He started by imitating old masters; a conscious strategy to gain academic recognition. He was also keenly aware of what wealthy art collectors craved. In his thirties, after becoming a Royal Academician and achieving financial success, he started painting in an increasingly impressionistic style, using landscape sketches from his extensive travels throughout Europe as inspiration. He experimented with the representation of clouds, water and light, with some of his most striking paintings using a vortex as a central compositional element. The most extreme departures from established artistic traditions were not understood at the time and generated negative criticism. Turner was attracted to printmaking and he mastered the different printmaking techniques. He especially liked creating mezzotints, and spent 12 years completing a collection of 71 prints using this technique, which he called the Liber Studiorum (Book of Studies). The collection was influential in elevating the status of landscape painting, which during the early 19th century was considered of lower artistic value than historical painting and portraits. Turner died in London in 1851, aged 76. He was a prolific artist, producing about 550 oil paintings and over 2,000 watercolours during his lifetime. In an unpredecented gesture, he bequeathed to the nation over 300 oil paintings, a collection worth a fortune. Many of the oil paintings are displayed at London's Tate Britain museum.

Community of Madrid

Autonomous community of Spain

Concept

The Community of Madrid (Spanish: Comunidad de Madrid; [komuniˈðað ðe maˈðɾið] ) is one of the seventeen autonomous communities and 50 provinces of Spain. It is located at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula and Central Plateau (Meseta Central); its capital and largest municipality is Madrid. The Community of Madrid is bounded to the south and east by Castilla–La Mancha and to the north and west by Castile and León. It was formally created in 1983, in order to address the particular status of the city of Madrid as the capital of the Spanish State and in urban hierarchy. Its boundaries are coextensive with those of the province of Madrid, which was until then conventionally included in the historical region of New Castile (Castilla la Nueva). The Community of Madrid is the 3rd most populous in Spain with 7,113,886 inhabitants as of 2025, roughly a seventh of the national total, mostly concentrated in the metropolitan area of Madrid. It is also the most densely populated autonomous community. Madrid has both the largest nominal GDP, slightly ahead of that of Catalonia, and the highest GDP per capita in the country. Madrid's economy is highly tertiarised, having a leading role in Spain's logistics and transportation. The Community of Madrid is almost entirely comprised in the Tagus Basin, from the Central System (Sistema Central) reliefs in the north and northwest to the Tagus River bed in the southern border. The climate is generally temperate, ranging from mediterranean to semi-arid, except in the Central System highlands. It contains four World Heritage Sites: the Monastery and Royal Site of El Escorial, the university and historic centre of Alcalá de Henares, the cultural landscape of Aranjuez and the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro park in Madrid City. In addition, the Montejo Beech Forest is part of the transnational Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe world heritage site.
